10 quotes that will keep you believing in yourself

I read a lot – I talk about reading a lot – but I usually keep my actual philosophizing to myself. I don’t like when people talk at me, so I try to keep my talking at people to a minimum. Instead of telling you what I learned from the ten books I’ve read so far this year, I’ve decided to share a quote from each that speaks to the importance of mental independence, toughness and resilience.

Knowledge, especially book knowledge, is worthless if you’re unable to make it fit the context of your thoughts and actions. I hope at least one of the following quotes resonates with you and, in turn, inspires you to achieve whatever you set your mind to:

1. “Physically, I’m a chicken. Mentally, I’m bold.” – Jeff Bezos

(The Everything Store by Brad Stone)

2. “The world does not want and will never have the heroes and heroines of the past. What this age needs is an enlightened youth not to undertake the tasks like theirs but to imbibe the spirit of these great men [and women] and answer the present call of duty with equal nobleness of soul.” – Carter G. Woodson

(The Mis-Education of the Negro by Carter G. Woodson)

3. “In life, everybody faces choices between doing what’s popular, easy, and wrong versus doing what’s lonely, difficult, and right.” –Ben Horowitz

(The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz)

4. “I realized that they could take everything from me except my mind and my heart. They could not take those things. Those things I still had control over. And I decided not to give them away.” – Nelson Mandela

(Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela)

5. “All thinking people today who have been oppressed are revolutionary. Any time you find someone today who’s afraid of the word ‘revolution,’ get him on out of your way…He hasn’t awakened yet.” –Malcolm X

(By Any Means Necessary by Malcolm X)

6. “We have a choice. We can embrace our humanness, which means embracing our broken nature and the compassion that remains our best hope of healing. Or we can deny our brokenness, forswear compassion, and, as a result, deny our own humanity.” –Bryan Stevenson

(Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson)

7. “My mentality is that of a samurai. I would rather commit seppuku than fail.” – Elon Musk

(Elon Musk by Ashlee Vance)

8. “Often I would have to walk several miles at night in order to recite my night-school lessons. There was never a time in my youth, no matter how dark and discouraging the days might be, when one resolve did not continually remain with me, and that was a determination to secure an education at any cost.” –Booker T. Washington

(Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington)

9. “Learn from others the tactics and the skills, but don’t change your dream.” –Jack Ma

(Alibaba: The House That Jack Ma Built by Duncan Clark)

10. “You are human and you will make mistakes. You will misjudge. You will yell. You will drink too much. You will hang out with people you shouldn’t. Not all of us can always be Jackie Robinson not even Jackie Robinson was always Jackie Robinson.” Ta-Nehisi Coates

(Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates)
